356. GROUP ANMATAFF "TINARIWEN"

i thought i'd feed off the 'ethnomusicology' theme from yesterday, so here's an irresistibly catchy et groove-infused, noodly, blues-tinged, guitar-led, colorful et festive track all the way from West Africa, Tinariwen by Mali-based outfit Group Anmataff off the utterly fascinating et endearing DIY compilation album "Music from Saharan Cellphones" (2011).

the title Tinariwen means deserts, but it is also likely to be a reference to the renowned band Taniriwen, who are also from the Sahara Desert, Northern Mali. enjoy!

if you like what you hear then i'd highly recommend getting yourself a copy of this precious et inspiring compilation album; "Music from Saharan Cellphones" is available from Sahel Sounds et Mississippi/Little Axe Records on lp!

the vinyl release is a selection of tracks taken from the original two volume compilation cassette releases. the songs were collected/copied/exchanged off various cellphone memory cards in the Malian town of Kidal in 2009-2010 by Portland-based producer et ethnomusicologist Christopher Kirkley, which made up the original compilations. they can still be downloaded for free on his site here: vol.1 et vol.2, if you don't have them already. enjoy!

you can also download "Music from Saharan Cellphones" digitally from bandcamp.
